On the 23rd June the volcanic wine area of La Geria in Lanzarote was host to the 5th Lanzarote Wine Run which led over 1600 runners and trekkers through the amazing vineyerds and tracks in between.
Those running the course started their 21.1km journey at Bodegas Los Bermejos and continued through other Bodegas until they reached Finca Testeyna where they met the trekkers who were walking the rest of the 12.4km course. The race finished at Uga where Kenneth Gasque, events director from Club La Santa, was proudly waiting to welcome everyone across the finish line to receive their medal.
Sands Active ambassadors Victor del Corral and Jose Carlos Hernandez took competed in the 21.1km run. The first male to cross the finish line was Victor del Corral from Spain in a time of 01:15:58 and the overall winning female was Azucena Lara Misas from Spain with a time of 01:44:00. Both won trophies and their weight in wine. Also winning trophies for the men in 2nd and 3rd place were Francisco Jose Garcia Vinoly and Majid Belouati with time of 01:18:08 and 1:24:30 respectively. For the women, Sabine Wittig came 2nd with a time of 01:45:28 followed by Annalise Moss in 3rd in a time of 1:47:43. Trophies also went to the winning age groupers.
The Lanzarote Wine run has become a unique event on the island as it not only embraces running on the scenic and often inaccessible landscape, but also includes a traditional cuisine festival celebrating the food and wine of Lanzarote. The cuisine festival took place over two days allowing everyone to sample the local delights. There was also a sports exhibition and live music.
Once again the Wine Run organisers including the Cabildo along with Kenneth Gasque and Club La Santa put on a fantastic event of which Sands Active was happy to attend with their ambassadors and we are looking forward to the 6th edition.
