Uplace Team at Sands Beach Active

At the beginning of this year the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team became the  BMC-Etixx Pro Triathlon Team powered by Uplace, after it was announced last summer that they would be changing their name. This is to reflect the increasing importance of the team’s partnership with its sponsor Etixx Sports Nutrition. Since 2014 Etixx has been a dedicated partner of the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team, offering certified and reliable nutritional products and support. By becoming a title sponsor of the BMC-Etixx team, Etixx has a clear ambition to be part of the team’s expected even  greater success this year.

This year’s team line-up consists of eight members from six different nationalities: Bart Aernouts (BEL), Liz Blatchford (AUS), Will Clarke (UK), Helle Frederiksen (DEN), Sofie Goos (BEL), Romain Guillaume (FRA), David McNamee (UK) Ronnie Schildknecht (SUI). These eight athletes are some of the best triathletes in the world, and between them have won a huge number of different competitions. After the departure of two team members at the end of last season, the team has been joined by David McNamee from the UK, a former Team GB athlete who successfully made the transition to Ironman triathlon distance last year. In his first season he was able to win Ironman UK, so makes a great addition to the team!

The team enjoyed an excellent training camp at Sands Beach Resort here in Lanzarote which included gym training, swim sessions in the 25 Metre laned swimming pool, bike rides around the island, and running along the nearby trails. As Bob explained, Lanzarote is one of the best triathlon training environments in the world due to the fantastic weather. The team was especially lucky during their stay this time as there was virtually no wind and sun everyday. The team were joined by BrakeThrough Media and Korupt Vision who were here to film and photograph the athletes for the team’s promotion. Overall  the stay this time was perfect for training, and promotion. The team has a clear ambition to be the best in the world, and here at Sands Beach Active we have every faith that they will achieve this, and will be offering our support every step of the way!

Here we have an amazing video about their training camp in Lanzarote on January 2016. Enjoy it!

Sands Beach Resort Pro-Athletes Finish Strongly at this Year’s Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii

Here at Sands Beach Active we are proud to announce the success of some of our sponsored professional athletes that train here at our resort in Costa Teguise. Lanzarote has proved time and again that it offers perfect training conditions due to the year round sunny weather and warm climate. This climate varies very little throughout the year with little rainfall, and few adverse weather conditions. This means training very rarely has to stop which is ideal for professional and amatuer athletes alike. At Sands Beach Resort, sport and fitness is part of our ethos which is why we created Sands Beach Active and sponsor professional athletes such as Spanish triathlete Ivan Rana, and the Uplace BMC Pro Triathlon Team.

The Ironman World Championship is the most prestigious annual Ironman competition in the world, and is the culmination of a series of different qualification events held around the world. It is the event that every Ironman competitor dreams of winning. At this year’s event Ivan Ran֘a from Spain finished a highly impressive 12th place overall. When you consider that over 10,000 athletes took place this is an amazing achievement!

Winners at Kona

Winners at Kona

From the Uplace BMC Team there were five members competing: Bart Aernouts from Belgium, Liz Blatchford from Australia, Sofie Goos from Belgium, Romain Guillaume from France, and Ronnie Schildknecht from Switzerland. The conditions this year were brutal with extreme heat. This meant that unfortunately Bart, Sofie and Ronnie had to make the difficult decision to pull out of the competition. We are sure that they will come back much stronger next year, especially after some more training at Sands Beach Resort!

Liz scored a podium finish though, after finishing in third place out of the women, an incredible result! Romain was able to finish a very respectable 19th place. Romain went to Kona with high expectations after finishing in a very close second place at this year’s Club La Santa Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote. He was aiming for a top 10 position in Kona, and although he didn’t achieve this he still did superbly.

We are very proud of all our athletes, as even qualifying for the Ironman World Championship is a huge achievement in itself. Although some of our athletes were unable to finish we still commend them for their grit and determination, especially as we know it must have been a hugely difficult decision for them. Our congratulations go to Ivan, Liz and Romain. We are really pleased that your training here with us at Sands Beach Resort has paid off, and we looking forward to seeing you all back here again soon!

Romain Guillaume and the Road to Kona

Here at Sands Beach Resort in Lanzarote we take sport, especially Triathlon very seriously which is why we offer sponsorship to some of the best triathletes in the world. One of these is Frenchman Romain Guillaume, a young triathlete with a big heart, and winning mentality. He is part of the Uplace-BMC Pro Triathlon Team which Sands Beach Active are proud to partner.  With triathlete parents it almost seems like taking part in this sport was his destiny. His dream of competing at the top level in the biggest triathlon events in the world has now become a hugely successful reality!

For the last couple of weeks Romain has been staying at Sands Beach Resort, and using it as his training base in preparation for the most prestigious Triathlon event in the world in Kona, Hawaii. Last weekend he was able to achieve a hugely respectable second place at the 2015 Club La Santa Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote. At several stages he was leading the race, and was able to improve on his third place position from last year’s event. This bodes extremely well for the upcoming Ironman event in Hawaii.

It is not all hardcore triathlon training for Romain though, as this week he had some fun at the Lanzarote Aquarium in Costa Teguise! Sands Beach Resort arranged for a photographic shoot with our onsite professional underwater photographer Petra Van Borm. This was a unique experience for Romain as he was swimming in the aquarium with sharks and stingrays! There was even a mermaid involved in the action, as one of the Sands Beach Resort team dressed up and swam with Romain. Quite a crowd formed to watch, and some of the photos are really spectacular!

After the fun and games at the aquarium it is now back to business for Romain, as he is set to embark on a trip to Hawaii on Monday, via Frankfurt and San Francisco. Everyday Romain has been hard at work getting ready for the toughest Triathlon event in the world in Kona, Hawaii which takes place on 10th October. He has been able to make full use of the excellent training facilities at the hotel including 25 meter heated swimming pool, fully equipped gym, and local cycle and running routes.

In some ways the event is similar to that of the Lanzarote Ironman as it takes place along the Kona Coast with a panorama dominated by black lava rock. The athletes have to deal with extreme conditions though, with crosswinds of 70kph, 35℃ temperatures and a scorching sun!

There will be over 2000 competitors in the event, including the best professional triathletes in the world. Last year Romain achieved an amazing 10th place, and this year has high hopes of a top eight finish. At Sands Beach Resort we are all rooting for him and wish him the best of luck. He is a great athlete to work for, and also an all-round good guy with a great sense of humor. Not every professional athlete would be willing to swim with sharks two weeks before such a big event!

Eneko Llanos and Jodie Swallow are victorious in Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote 2015

The fourth edition of Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote was held on Saturday 19th September, organized by Club La Santa in collaboration with the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

The event, which had about 500 participants, started at 8.00 am at Lake La Santa, where participants swam 1900 meters, then continued with a 90.1 km bicycle ride, and finished with a run of 21.1 km near the village which ended in the Club La Santa running track.
The weather remained cool and windless for most of the morning, which aided the performance of the event for all the triathletes. Furthermore, they were surrounded by family and friends who supported them along the way and helped provide the necessary encouragement for them to meet the challenge.

From the men, Eneko Llanos from Spain was victorious, followed by Romain Guillaume, and Antony Costes, both from France. As for the women, the clear winner was Jodie Swallow, with Jeanne Collonge second, and the Spanish Saleta Castro third.

For another year, the event has left a great impression on the participants, who are already planning to prepare for the next edition.”

Sailfish Berga by Sands Beach Active 2015

Last weekend the fifth edition of Berga Sailfish by Sands Beach Active took place, an event that has managed to grow year after year by adding more and more participants.

In this edition, some 800 participants gathered for the event.
The competition started at 8am, in which athletes began with a 1.9 km swim on a triangular course. After completing this section, the competitors hopped on their bikes to complete a 90 km bike ride at a height of 1000m. Finally they had to run the 21 km route that separated them from their goal. This last section consisted of three laps around the city, after which participants were welcomed by their family and friends.

This year’s event winner was Andreas Dreitz, followed by Jordi Matos in second place and Sergi Puigmal in third place. The German Dreitz held the lead from start to finish, taking a lead of almost 11 minutes over Jordi Matos.

As for the women, Judit Corachan managed to win first place, and she shared the podium with Mercè Tusell and María Ortega de Miguel.

After experiencing a new success in participation in 2015, Sailfish Berga by Sands Beach Active is becoming one of the most important events in Spain.

Now we just have to start preparing and counting down the days for the sixth edition in 2016.

Ironman Lanzarote 2015: Horst Reichel gives us some tips to deal with the cycling sector.

For many, Ironman Lanzarote is seen as one of the toughest triathlons in the world. The conditions of wind and sun that the island offers, make the Ironman an even more demanding challenge.

To make the big day more bearable, Horst Reichel, professional triathlete, gives us a few tips to deal with the cycling sector. Among the tips he states that the key is to stay calm, do not rush to give everything you have from the start because it will be a long day, therefore you must concentrate on starting with a comfortable pace and reserving your energy. Remember nutrition and do not forget to drink.

Keeping a steady pace should be your main goal. Be consistent in both uphills and downhills and flat parts, with a comfortable pace without going neither too slow nor too fast.
