At the climax to an exhilarating London 2012 which has set the Olympics bar at a new level, the men’s Olympic Marathon race brought Londoners onto the streets in their thousands to watch as Uganda’s Stephen Kiprotich took gold in a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 1 second.
Running in the gruelling 42.2 km race took its toll on the 100 competitors with only 85 athletes finishing. But amongst the heroes who crossed the finishing line in the summer sunshine yesterday, none has given us greater pride than our own Jose Carlos Hernandez. On his debut Olympics, Jose Carlos told Canarias7.es that he hit a bad patch at just 18km into the race when he felt as if his legs were giving up on him so he slowed down, took plenty of liquids and pushed himself onwards.
Jose Carlos willed himself to keep going and crossed the line in 34th position with a finish time of 2hrs 17 minutes and 48 seconds, less than 10 minutes behind the gold medallist.
Jose Carlos started his training at Sands Beach Resort earlier this year and our Director Juan Carlos Albuixech was in London to cheer him on while those of us left here in Lanzarote lived every kilometre of the race with our friend and were overjoyed at his incredible achievement. But when Jose returned to us at Sands Beach Resort, all his friends on the staff were there to give him the hero’s welcome he so richly deserves.
Congratulations Jose! We are all so proud of you. Rio 2016 awaits!
