The weather may not have been kind to Lanzarote beach babes on Sunday as dark clouds, high winds and a distinct cool in the air bucked the summer weather trend, but for the many runners in the Lanzarote Wine Run 2012, it was better than last year’s searing heat.
Organised by Club La Santa, the race began at the Dolores Church in Mancha Blanca and traversed the extraordinary beauty of the Geria wine growing region. Runners and helpers fought the wind with spirits high and the occasional sample of the region’s famous Malvasia wine en route to get them to the finishing line 21km later.
First to finish the course was Xavi Queral Forcadell in a time of 1:25:43, hotly pursued by our own Nicolas Ward Muñez – one of our Sands Beach sponsored athletes – who is currently recovering from a fall earlier this year and is making his way back to full fitness with a time of 1:26:35. Third place was Jacobo Hernandez Martin in a time of 1:29:41.
In the women’s group, first over the line was Aroa Merino Betancor in a time of 1:46:05, with second place going to Debbie Jones in a time of 1:58:02 and third place finisher was Belinda Guillen Callero in 1:58:27 .
Amongst the many heroes of the event were the athletes from TriWWW and the teams of helpers who pushed their chairs across the rugged terrain, amongst them our own Juan Carlos Albuixech, Director of Sands Beach Resort.
Xavi and Aroa, as winners in the male and female categories each won their own weight in wine which surely has to be one of the best prizes ever! For everyone else, the wonderful wine flowed along with the music and superb local produce at the after event party where thousands of people sampled the delights of this very special region and the warmth of the spirit of sports for all that so typifies Lanzarote.
Well done everyone and here’s to next year’s Wine Run – Salud!
