Haría Extreme Competition 2012

Saturday 16th June 2012 saw one of Lanzarote‘s toughest competitions taking place in the rural hinterland of Haría where athletes battled the terrain and the clock to push their stamina to the limits. Luckily, professional assistance, food, refreshments, music, crowds and not least Buddy were all on hand to keep body and soul together and ensure everyone had an extremely good time.

With cloud cover keeping the temperatures in an ideal low 20ºC bracket and the wind holding steady at around 40 knots, over 600 athletes took to the volcanic malpaís of Haría to run distances of 10km, 22.5 km and 32.5 km depending on what category they were in. But it wasn’t the distance that was the athletes’ biggest challenge, it was the extreme nature of the terrain.

Sands Beach Active at Haria Extreme 2012

Across volcanic lava fields; soft, stamina-sapping sand and boulder strewn paths to slippery slopes and punishing inclines so steep they required a rope to get to the top, Lanzarote gave her all in ensuring athletes were tested to the limit. The Sands Beach Active team stand was right at the top of the hill and we could see the relief on the faces of athletes as they were greeted by the sight of Buddy and the team – at least, we think it was relief 🙂

TriWWW athletes at Haría Extreme 2012

Sands Beach Resort Director Juan Carlos Albuixech once again lent his muscles and moral support to the wonderful TriWWW by aiding with pushing athletes, and our own physio Juan Montero was on hand to administer assistance and support to his Stilo Vitae team.

Congratulations go to Luis Alberto Hernando Alzaga who won the punishing Ruta de Copa de España distance of 32.5 km which included ascents and descents of a gruelling 1450 metres. Luis finished in 2hrs 34mins 28secs. Second place at this distance was Tófol Castañer Bernat in 2:34:36 and third was Iván Ortiz Carrión in 2:36:49.

In the 22.5 kilometres distance which included ascents and descents of 950 metres, congratulations go to Fernando Toribio Perez who finished in 1:47:55, to second place Jose Carlos Ciprian Bergua with a time of 1:49:38 and to third placed Daniel Santana García who finished in 1:52:18.

In the ‘senderistas’ distance of 10km, congratulations go to Javier Guillen Romero with a time of 1:06:00, second place Jorge Carlos Martín Acosta who finished in 1:07:47 and third placed Deogracias Morales Perdomo who’s time was 1:08:05.

Congratulations also go to the Ayuntamiento de Haría for their superb organisation of the event, to the sponsors who made it happen, to all the volunteers who made the event possible and all spectators who made it such fun. It was an Extreme pleasure to spend our Saturday with you and we look forward to Haría Extreme 2013.
