Last weekend saw the staging of the Lanzarote International Duathlon. Comprising a 5km run followed by a 20km cycle and finishing with a 2.5km run, this is the first testing event of the year and traditionally attracts an international line up.
Romping home in first place with a cool four minutes over his nearest competitor was British athlete and Sands Beach Resort guest, Ritchie Nicholls. Finishing second and third respectively were two more of our guests; Sands Beach Resort sponsored athlete Alejandro Santamaria in second place and Spanish athlete Peru Alfaro in third.
Sharing podium honours for our Sands Beach guests was Eimear Mullan who took first place in the women’s category and notching up a quintet of success for our athletes was our friend and Sands Beach Resort sponsored athlete Rafa Botello. Participating in his first duathlon since the World Championship Duathlon in Gijon in September 2011, Rafa and one other wheelchair athlete joined the ranks of 113 able bodied athletes to complete the course. Using the event as a good workout, Rafa was delighted to come home in 37th place overall in a time of 1hr 12mins, a time which he admits could have been improved if he hadn’t been laughing so much with his fellow wheelchair competitor at the transition stages 🙂
Chatting to the winners, it seems that our buffet options are one of the things that help our athletes to power up for their competitive performance, providing fresh, healthy and delicious options to complement training regimes. Naturally, our sports and leisure facilities, relaxed and friendly atmosphere, stunning tropical surroundings and superb accommodation don’t do any harm either.
Many congratulations to all the runners and particularly to Ritchie, Alejandro, Peru and Eimear for their outstanding performances. We look forward to hosting you all again soon at Sands Beach Resort. And while we’re handing out the plaudits, a big thank you to the catering team at our Hacienda Restaurant who work so hard to provide fresh and tasty choices to suit everyone from family guests to athletes.
