Ironman Lanzarote 2015: Horst Reichel gives us some tips to deal with the cycling sector.

For many, Ironman Lanzarote is seen as one of the toughest triathlons in the world. The conditions of wind and sun that the island offers, make the Ironman an even more demanding challenge.

To make the big day more bearable, Horst Reichel, professional triathlete, gives us a few tips to deal with the cycling sector. Among the tips he states that the key is to stay calm, do not rush to give everything you have from the start because it will be a long day, therefore you must concentrate on starting with a comfortable pace and reserving your energy. Remember nutrition and do not forget to drink.

Keeping a steady pace should be your main goal. Be consistent in both uphills and downhills and flat parts, with a comfortable pace without going neither too slow nor too fast.

Evert Scheltinga and Michaela Herlbauer, the winners of the 2015 edition of the Tri 122.

It was a festive day for triathletes this weekend in Costa Teguise, which held the 4th edition of tri122 middle distance triathlon.

One hundred triathletes gathered at 8:00h in Playa de Las Cucharas where it was a perfect sunny day with no wind.

After a calm swim, cycling in the Northern part of the island with rain and a long run under the strong sun, Evert Scheltinga was the overall winner (7:04:32) after leading the competition at all times. The second place went to the Austrian Daniel Herlbauer (4:25:21), who had prepared for the competition in Sands Beach Resort, while third place was occupied by the Lanzarote triathlete Daniel Armas (4:36:28).

It was a very good day for the Lanzarote Triathlon, and a good start to the season for many.

Tabayesco – a port of irresistible mountains

Tabayesco is one of the most popular and ambitious ports of Lanzarote.

The sloping curves of Tabayesco are one of the busiest areas for cycling and the majority of triathletes situated in Lanzarote know that it is the perfect place to train and compete. We must not forget that this port is a part of the circuit for the Ironman 70.3 and other competitions of long distance such as the Tri122.

We accompanied the triathletes in their climb to Tabayesco to see who would be the quickest and would win a prize. Finally the winner was announced as Jorge San Martín who completed the course in 28:40m.

There is no doubt that the boys enjoyed a both intense and fun day.

The first Sands Beach Active aquathlon

On Saturday the 7th of February, Sands Beach Resort celebrated the first Sands Beach Active aquathlon. Fortunately, we have had good participation and an even better atmosphere.

During the winter season, many triathletes escape to Lanzarote for the beautiful sun that the island offers at this time of year. These excellent weather conditions allow them to do their best during their workouts. We took advantage of the large influx of triathletes at Sands Beach Resort during these months and organized the first Sands Beach Active Aquathlon.

We had a wide range of athletes of different nationalities and from different places of training. Some of them were professionals but of course we made room for the small ones.

Some of the guests at Sands Beach Resort did not want to miss this sporting event and did not hesitate to encourage the athletes which brought such a great atmosphere. Among those who went to see the triathlete professionals were Marino Vanhoenacker , Víctor Del Corral, Stephen Bayliss and Helle Frederiksen.

Finally the first three positions were conquered by Daniel Hofer, followed by Alessandro Terranova and Peru Alfaro, in the men’s category. While in the women’s category, it was Gaia Perón who crossed the finish line first, followed by Paola Saitta and Silvia Saitta.

James Mitchell Photography

During these weeks we have been able to observe the concentration level of the team by watching them train hard and carry out sessions of biking and racing. They have also been swimming in both the swimming pool and open water as well as training in the fitness centre. The objective is clear: be at the highest level and make the cut in the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

They have made good use of their stay and done some photo sessions with James Mitchell, using the exotic landscapes that the island has to offer as backdrops.

Not only has there been time to train but also time for endless amounts of fun with lots of laughter where we were able to notice the strong unison of the team.

We have pleasant memories of your stay and we hope that you achieve all the challenges that are put in your way. Good luck team!
