It has been an incredibly exciting week here at Sands Beach Active where we’ve been left breathless by the performances of surfers at the Islas Canarias Santa Pro competition at Playa San Juan, at the southern end of Playa de Famara in Teguise.
Sponsored by Sands Beach Active and organized by our partners, Santa Pro Surf, the competitors have put on a dazzling display of skills for those of us watching, windswept and sun kissed, from the golden shores of Playa San Juan.
But topping the points for his consistently excellent surfing this week has been Portugal’s Tiago Pires who takes centre stage on the podium and picks up 3,500 ranking points and a cheque for 25,000 US dollars. Coming into second place after a nail-biting final was USA’s Gabe Kling who wowed us all week with his sailing and picked up 2640 points and a cheque for 12,500 US dollars as his reward.
Beginning on Tuesday 23rd October, the conditions at Famara were set well for the competition which saw heats and head to heads over Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during which spectators were able to see some of the world’s best surfers riding the swell and the two to three foot waves. After eight heats, it was Gabe Kling (USA), Nathaniel Curran (USA), Tiago Pires (Portugal) and Willian Cardoso (Brazil) who emerged from the quarter finals.
Going head to head in the semi-finals, Gabe Kling won out over Nathaniel Curran while Tiago Pires emerged triumphant over Willian Cardoso and the stage was set for the final. The crowd expected Gabe Kling to continue his thrilling week of 9 point rides but on the night he just didn’t find the right waves to max his points and has this to say of his performance:
“I didn’t surf my best heat last and that’s what it’s all about. Tiago surfed great all event, there’s no shame in losing to him. I haven’t really had much else since my third at the beginning of the year, so there’s a lot of positives I can take from that and I had a great time!”
But it was Tiago Pires who seemed to go from strength to strength and fought hard in the final to emerge victorious:
“It’s been a very tough event with many guys shredding and I didn’t see myself make the final, but things got together for me and I felt better and better throughout the event with the semifinal being my peak performance. I was scared of Gabe cause he’s a really good competitor, he’s won events and I knew it was going to be a hard one!”
It has certainly been a fantastic week for surfing and for Lanzarote which has once again shown itself to be a world class sports destination. Many congratulations go to Tiago Pires, Gabe Kling, Nathaniel Curran, Willian Cardoso and all the world class surfers who gave us such a thrilling competition. Thanks go also to Santa Pro Lanzarote who staged such a fantastic event and to Teguise for supplying a stunning landscape and beautiful beach on which to hold the ASP-6 Star Islas Canarias Santa Pro.
