Several members of the Tri Activ team were in action over the weekend at Lanzarote’s Triace sprint triathlon, and a few of them featured on the podium!
The event was held in the island’s capital of Arrecife, with around 250 registered to start, as individuals and in relay teams.
The 750 metre swim started from a small beach and finished with a run up some steps into T1. Part of it was very choppy, but it soon smoothed out as the swimmers got into the main bay. Bradley Ibrahim was one of only four swimmers to complete the swim in under ten minutes.
The 20KM ride was through closed-off streets in Arrecife, and consisted of four loops. One section was quite hard into a strong wind, but most of it was fast and furious, with some very tight corners, and average speeds for the male leaders of over 36KMH.
The 5KM run was over three loops along the main shopping street in Arrecife and around the famous Charco san Ginés. Like the bike course, it was flat and easy.
There was a lot of support throughout the race, and the atmosphere and organisation throughout the day was excellent.
This was the first real showing of Team TriActiv since the club was federated, and it resulted in some impressive performances. All 11 athletes who competed for the team finished the event, and no less than 4 of them appeared on the podium for their category:
- Bradley Ibrahim Category CDM 1st
- Georgia Abbott Cateogry CDF 1st
- Lionel Morales Gonzales Category Tri2M 1st
- Julie Cliffe-Jones Category V1F 2nd
Simon Leadbeatter’s performance in his second ever triathlon was excellent, and other finishers from the club included Paul Rodbourn, José David Castellano, Carlos Vazquez, Urko Pinto and Mike Cliffe-Jones. Fernando Gonzales also raced in TriActiv colours as part of a relay team.
Team coach Bella Bayliss said:
“I am so happy and proud of the way my TriActiv athletes are training. Their performances reflect the work they are putting in.
It is a pleasure to coach such an enthusiastic group of people. Keep up the great training and more success is around the corner. I look forward to watching everyone continue to train hard and then watching you at the races later in the year.”
Overall, it was a great day for the team, and there’s plenty more to come in the future!
