With less than one week to go before athletes get under starter’s orders for the world’s premier off-road triathlon, Sands Beach Active sponsored athlete Victor Del Corral has flown out to the paradise island of Maui in Hawaii to compete in the 2012 XTERRA World Championships.
Beginning at 9am on Sunday 28th October with a 1.5 kilometre rough water swim with a short beach sprint mid-way, at DT Flemings Beach in front of the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. Next up is the 30.4 kilometre mountain bike ride which involves cycling up and down the lower slopes of the West Maui Mountains a dozen times in a big loop. With ravines dropping to river beds and head high vegetation, the organisers claim athletes will need “their climbing legs and their descending courage” to get through it.
Then, just as you thought it couldn’t get any harder, athletes have to face a 9.5 kilometre trail run through elephant grass, pineapple fields and forest including 60 foot high ironwood evergreens and fallen trees with a killer, 250 metre sandy beach run right at the end.
To be honest, just typing out the course details has left me feeling completely defeated so how athletes actually manage to complete this course is a mystery to me. But our Ironman Lanzarote 2012 title holder, Victor Del Corral is ready to take it all on and we’ll be following his progress LIVE on the XTERRA website live stream and on Twitter using the hashtag #XTERRAMaui
