Women’s Under 19’s International Basketball Tournament

Sands Beach hosted the women’s under 19’s International Basketball Tournament this past week and witnessed the strength of the USA team.

Teams from Spain, Australia, America, and Canada competed over an action packed weekend where the USA was triumphant winning the tournament.

The International Basketball Tournament was held in the Pabellón Municipal de Teguise where the USA team had a good weekend playing strong games against the Canadian and Spanish teams however, the game against Australia was very close. The final games were held on Sunday when Australia played Spain and USA played Canada.


Australia played a strong game against Spain and even though Spain fought back it was not enough as Australia won 75-58. USA had a phenomenal start to their first quarter in their game against Canada and after leading the game won 69-49. After the two final games were played, the USA captured the International Basketball Tournament with Australia finishing in 2nd place and Canada in 3rd. The teams will now go on to compete in the FIBA U19 World Championships which will be hosted by Lithuania later this month.

During the tournament the teams enjoyed the hospitality of Sands Beach including a poolside BBQ. The USA girls even tried their hand at SUP (stand up paddling). The USA team thanked Sands Beach for their ‘wonderful hospitality’ and for hosting the tournament. We wish you luck in the World Championships in Lithuania and we will be following you.

Also, a big well done to Spain who played in the women’s U20 European Championship this weekend where they claimed the European title for the third consecutive year.
